ATHENS, TN (WRCB) –
Ingleside Elementary School in Athens City Schools, Tennessee, was surprised with the TAP School of Promise Award. This recognition, which comes with a financial prize of $5,000, honors a TAP school for its demonstrated efforts in the early stages of implementing TAP: The System for Teacher and Student Advancement. The award was presented before more than 1,200 educators and policy leaders attending a special Saturday luncheon at the 14th National TAP Conference in Los Angeles, California. Ingleside Elementary Principal Debbie Harrison accepted the award on the school’s behalf.
TAP: The System for Teacher and Student Advancement is America’s leading comprehensive educator effectiveness model that aligns career advancement, professional development, educator evaluation and performance-based compensation. For more than a decade, TAP has worked to improve teacher effectiveness and student achievement in high-need urban, rural and suburban schools across the country. It is managed and supported by the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET).
“Novice and veteran educators alike at Ingleside Elementary have embraced TAP as a growth model for all teachers and students,” said Dr. Gary Stark, president and chief executive officer of NIET. “The TAP Leadership Team is well-poised for the future ahead, and I look forward to following Ingleside’s progress.”
Since adopting the TAP System in the 2012-13 school year, Ingleside Elementary School has focused on improving learning by tailoring weekly professional development to specific needs; creating leadership roles to mentor others through TAP mentor and master teacher positions; implementing TAP’s teacher support and evaluation with rigor; and instituting a competitive compensation system to reward educators for increased skill and student performance.
“With TAP,” said Harrison, “I have found a way for my staff to consistently be involved and supported by professional development that is directly aligned to the needs of our school.”
Ingleside Elementary School is among four TAP School of Promise Award recipients this year. The others are John Adams Middle School in the Grand Prairie Independent School District, Texas; Saydel High School in the Saydel Community School District, Iowa; and Somerset Junior High School in the Somerset Independent School District, Texas.
